Outcomes from the June 1 goal-setting meeting

We were pleased that approximately 75 people participated in the meeting.  Sadly, our attempt to record presentations was unsuccessful.  The slides presented have been posted on our website. The following goals were adopted:

  • Improve adolescent sleep: Because 69% of Grade 10s are chronically sleep deprived.
  • Youth feeling safe in their community: Because 1/3 of Grade 10s reported feeling unsafe.

Rebecca Shams from the local Health Unit presented the results of youth engagement performed to date.  Although it’s very early in the youth engagement journey, the insight that we gained is profound.  We were honoured to have 2 youth tell the room why our communities need to improve.  Our obligation is to expand youth engagement to not only include consultation but active leadership in defining action plans.

The next step is a Youth Summit. Following is information Rebecca distributed to promote the event.  Please share widely.

Greetings community partners!

Attached is the flyer for the Planet Youth Lanark County Youth Summit taking place on August 23rd in Carleton Place. We would greatly appreciate any help promoting this to your networks, particularly any that serve or include youth. It’s open to any youth who live, go to school, work or play in Lanark County and are entering grades 7-12 in September. Timelines are tight as registration is needed by Friday, August 18th.

Happy to answer any questions as they arise and we really appreciate your help in spreading the word so we can get as much youth participation as possible for the Summit. The ideas generated there will be crucial for local action planning this Fall.

Cheers,
