In April, Almonte District High School’s Parent Council, in collaboration with Open Doors Mental Health, hosted a screening of the documentary Screenagers: The Next Chapter.
Online environments are big influencers on our mental health. Planet Youth Lanark County participated in the panel discussion held after the movie about youth, screentime and mental health. While there is no silver bullet single solution to youth mental wellbeing – open communication is a good start. Ask young people what drives their use of screens and how it fits into their lives. Connecting with other parents is also key – this is a big issue to tackle alone, and we can all use peer support. If we work together, with our young people and other parents, we can support boundaries on screens as a community.
Planet Youth is committed to increasing protective factors around youth wellbeing; things like meaningful connections to peers, family and other adults, safe and supportive activities and environments, and adequate sleep. There is also a big role for governments to regulate online environments and tech companies to make them safer for everyone.
